NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM
Wayfinding|Map Design|Pictogram
The New England Aquarium in Boston welcomes thousands of visitors daily, many navigating multiple floors with children, strollers, and limited time. The existing signage made it difficult to quickly locate key amenities and distinguish between exhibition zones. I designed a clear, family‑friendly wayfinding system to reduce confusion and improve the visitor experience.
My solution includes a large‑format floor guide at each level, highlighting amenities and circulation paths, a set of custom pictograms for every exhibition, and consistent room identification signs throughout the building. The pictograms use simple, playful shapes that appeal to kids while remaining legible for adults. Together, these elements create a cohesive visual language that helps families move through the aquarium with confidence.
